"KAYAKALP" CENTER THAT TREATS UNWANTED HAIR, CELEBRATES SILVER JUBILEE
On the occasion of the silver jubilee, the "Kayakalpa" center will be organizing workshops on the electrolysis method of epilation (removal of hair), lectures for school and college students as also for the medical professionals giving them information of this method. In addition, a poster exhibition educating people on the mis-understanding in regard to the unwanted growth of hair, and on how to avoid the mistakes etc. will be held, informed Mrs. Dhamdhere.
With the expansion and modernization "Kayakalp" will start functioning in a specious 750 Sq.ft. area. Twelve Epilation instruments have been installed in the new center. This will facilitate treatment of nine patients at a time. Adjacent to each of the nine cost for treatment, magnifying glasses are fixed to see the hair on their faces. "Kayakalp" is the largest center in Maharashtra. using electrolysis method, added Mrs. Dhamdhere.
With the latest facilities available in the Center, it is possible to make electrolysis using the galvanic current and thermolysis using faradic current, and it is possible to use both the current jointly for the Blading and Auto blading technique for treatment. For the last eight years along with Mrs. Dhamdhere, her daughter-in-law Ujwala Dhamdhere and her brother's wife Jayashree Gadgil have been using electrolysis method. There are fourteen women working in the "Kayakalpa" center, today, who are all trained by Mrs. Dhamdhere.
Talking about the establishment of "Kayakalpa" center, Mrs. Dhamdhere told that twenty-four years ago, a woman relative of hers felt below dignity to meet and face people because of the unwanted hair on her face. She was mentally suffocated. while trying to find out some treatment for her problems, the skin specialist Dr. Mohan Gharpure informed her about electrolysis method and gave her his own machine "Hafreecator" for use. Since no training was available in india in those days. she made an experiment of the "Hafreecator" machine on her own legs under the guidance of Dr. Gharpure. When the doctor became confident about the favourable effects of the treatment for about one-year, she started to treat other patients. At that time, with the machine given by Dr. Gharpure, she started the work in two rooms of 10' X 8' size and established the center.
Explaining how she developed her method of electrolysis, she said that the machine brought from England had very low voltage of electricity. The needle was also very thin. It was observed that the process of epilation would be a lengthy one. Therefore, taking into account the texture, the thickness of the skin, as also the tolerance of the indian woman, she made changes in the machine with the help of an engineer, so as to get more voltage of electrical current. she also started using the needles made in india. As the results were good, patients' confidence in this method also increased. Her daughter Ujwala Dhamdhere added that since there was an increase in the activity in 1976, Mrs. Dhamdhere completed the formal education in electrolysis in Malaysia and Singapore, and further went to the USA in 1990, 1994 and 1996 for training and acquired the latest technique in the field.
In addition to electrolysis, she also started to treat patients with eyelids turned inside using the trichiasis method since 1982. Mrs. Jyoti Dhamdhere is the only lady in the whole of Asia, who has successfully treated patients by tricaysis method without the use of the operation theatre. Jyoti Dhamdhere also got the honour to read a paper on Electrolysis in the Medical conference held in Baroda in 1983, informed Ujwala Dhamdhere.
About her twenty-five year of experience in electrolysis Mrs. Dhamdhere told that she has treated more than eight thousand patients so far. Although electrolysis is a medical treatment, since a lady with unwanted hair on the face also becomes a mental patient, sometimes it becomes necessary to support her morale and encourage her confidence. Earlier, the social attitude towards the woman getting electrolysis treatment was not encouraging, as such it was experienced that many times a patient who received the electrolysis treatment would not show any sign of recognition when met in the street. However, of late, there is a change in the outlook of patients as also of the society in this regard, and electrolysis is respected as the scientific treatment.
The awareness of this treatment appears to have increased among men too. With the twenty-five years of practice in electrolysis, she feels satisfied that she could raise the prestige of this profession, said Mrs. Jyoti Dhamdhere. However, in spite of the fact that electrolysis is a scientific treatment, patients are cheated because of mis-infomation on the subject as also because of the advertisement giving false promises of complete treatment in a day. she regretted. She also expressed the need to build Electrolysis organization in India like those in England and America, to control the misuse of the method and protect patients from cheating.
